Hoop Dance Classes @ Euphoria Studios

Hoop Dance, Portland, OregonHave you seen the Coen Brothers mid 90′s classic The Hudsucker Proxy? If not, I’ll quickly fill you in. The plot line involves a simpleminded (is “slow” a better euphemism?) young man played by Tim Robbins hired as a stooge for a big money stock scandal. Instead he ends up inventing one of the biggest consumer crazes of the century: the hula hoop (not based on a true story, btw). Anyhow, the result of watching this movie is that I can’t see a hula hoop now with without picturing the scene where Tim Robbins pitches his idea to the company board by drawing a circle on a notepad.

Hudsucker Proxy aside, the art of hula hooping seems to be enjoying a renaissance of sorts these days. In Portland, at least. There’s even a hula troupe in town called the Whirly Girls (sp?). And now you can learn how to be an expert yourself with the hoop by signing up for Hoop Dance Classes at Euphoria Studios! Learn basic moves to advance tricks. All levels are welcome. Euphoria Studios is a beautiful space with a wall of mirrors and plenty of space to work on your moves. Hula hoops are provided for class, and are for sale to take home. They also have a custom hoop making workshop for those interested. Space is limited so sign up today!

To sign up contact Serena at (971) 676-7621 or xdoodlbugx@aol.com. Drop in rate is $20 and a 6 week series is $90.

Capoeira Camp 2008

About five years ago, during one of my first weekends in Portland, my friends and I randomly ended up at some party in NE. When we walked to the backyard we saw a dozen or so people roundhouse kicking and karate chopping inches from each others faces around a huge fire pit. There was a group of rag tag musicians playing South American inspired music and everyone seemed to know exactly what was going on except my naive Midwestern friends and I. We cracked a beer and said “so, this is Portland.” Later that night I learned that what these crazy people were doing was called Capoeira. Read More
