Ganesh at the Portland Art Museum

The recent debut of Ganesh has expanded the already breathtaking collection of eastern religious sculptures and artwork that is available at the Portland Art Museum.  Though Ganesh the elephant is not the only cool Hindu artifact in the museum, a large sculpture of Ganesh’s father (Shiva) has been part of the collection for some time now.  The eastern art collection also includes artifacts from Korea, Japan, China, and India.  As the seat of buddhism and hinduism for hundreds and hundreds of years, India was a large source of these religious sculptures, paintings, and many little ivory icons with detailed carvings displayed.  The pottery and tapestries from Korea is a also a good stop to make, the tapestries are woven with detailed writings in the ancient Korean language.  Though, don’t make any sudden movements near the tapestries because the motion sensing units are extremely sensitive and will set off the alarm (yes, I’m only warning you because I did set of the rooms alarm on accident).  Come check it out, tours of the exhibit are going on nearly every afternoon until June, adults are $15 and kids under 17 are always free.

The Energy Trust of Oregon has put together the Better Living Home, Garden & Lifestyle show at the Expo center.  Opening today,

OMSI After Dark

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry has always been the best destination in Portland to engage kids in the wonders of science, physics, and technology.  OMSI is now hosting “OMSI After Dark” the last Wednesday of each month, which is all of the fun of OMSI without the little ones.  That’s right, one night a month OMSI is open for adults only (21+ and remember your ID) and beer, wine, pizza, and sandwiches will be available.  Grab a glass of wine and explore the exhibits about dinosaur fossils, or better yet you can take your pint o’ beer over to the robotics area (my favorite) and play with the hands on activities available.  OMSI After Dark gives you the opportunity to explore the wonders of OMSI sans the kidlets.  Now if only Disneyland did something like this for a day….. The Portland Timbers

Officially announced today, the Portland Timbers will be the newest member of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.  Tickets and season passes are already on sale through the Portland Timbers official website, though the team will not actually play until 2011 when the team has been formed (which may include contracting players from teams as far away as Europe), and the renovations to PGE park have been completed.  The renovation of PGE park to include larger, newer soccer facilities.  The Portland Timbers is the third new team to join MLS recently along with a team from Seattle who were victorious in their first game last night, and Vancouver who was awarded a team earlier this week.  Maybe soccer will replace football and baseball as the preferred sport nationwide as it seems to be doing here in the northwest.  No word yet if we will be contracting soccer hooligans from Europe along with the players. Mississippi Studios

The newly renovated and completely done over Mississippi Studios in north east Portland can now hold about 250 people standing which opens the doors for bigger shows and, of course, more music.  The opening night show on March 4th featured Weinland, Rebecca Gates, Pete Krebs, the Dimes, James Low, Chris Robley, Stephanie Schneiderman, Lewi Longmire, and the Portland Cello Project.  Alicia Rose and Jim Brunberg have revolutionized the original (tiny) nightclub and turned it into what may become a premier music venue for Portland.  To find music, whether its folk or indie rock, check out www.mississippistudios.com and order tickets to their next show. Thai Orchid

Thai food is one of my absolute favorite world foods.  I am always scouting for a good thai place, and boy have I found a good one.  Thai Orchid is a small chain in the Portland area that serves some awesome lamb curry,  and wonderfully spicy mussaman curry.  I wanted to try more, but the portions are large so be prepared to take some leftovers home for the next day.  For drinks there is a large list of wines, as well as a beer selection from all around Asia.  Personally, I would rather have a huge glass of Thai Iced Tea which is a delicious sugary mystery drink.  Im not sure what is in this addictive drink to create its taste, but whatever is in there turns the color of the drink to a bright traffic cone orange.
