Lolo’s Tapas on Alberta

lolosAfter Last Thursday Art on Alberta late last night, I dropped in to try tapas for the first time ever at Lolo’s tapas to enjoy something new while the crowds dispersed.  Despite the busy night, the place was a pleasant hum of people talking quietly and sharing their Spanish finger food.  Over the course of the night we ended up trying the local bread dipped in a balsamic vinegar/oil sauce with some Catalan Tomato Bread to get started.  The bread was very good, and very soft, but I was much more enthusiastic about the tomato bread, which was some slightly strange (but great) cheese slices on a crusty piece of bread spread with their own tomato sauce with finely chopped dill on top.  It was presented very well, and tasted great.  To finish the night we had the Chicken Skewers with sherry sauce and the Fideos mixto pasta.  The pasta was good, but slightly more balsamic than my taste.  I was the only one with that opinion though, the pasta was quickly devoured by someone else who remarked that it was amazing, especially the large prawns that were underneath the noodles.  I was very impressed with the chicken skewers that our server suggested, they were really striking and different, but in that really good new food sort of way.

Portland City Grill Happy Hour

portlandcitygrillThe Portland City Grill is an amazing high class restaurant on the 30th floor of the U.S. Bank building (which is also the tallest building in Portland).  4:30pm to 6:30pm is happy hour with an absolutely amazing food menu.  The drinks are not discounted (that I could tell anyway) for happy hour, but the food is at a great discount.  I started off with just the caesar salad, which was honestly one of the best I have had, the leafy greens were very crisp and fresh.  Still hungry, I ended up ordering the White Cheddar Chive Burger.  Best burger ever.  Without exaggeration, the best burger ever.  You have to try it.  Over the course of the night the four people present tried several different happy hour menu items, each of them tasted great; but nothing beat that burger.

Posies: family-friendly coffee

posies

Newly opened in North Portland is Posies, one of Portland’s few family-friendly coffee cafes. Parents Jessie and Jonathon were only too aware of the “evil eye” when trying to enjoy coffee or dining out of the house while with their child, and wanted to create a space where families were welcomed, rather than treated with annoyance and irritation. Coupled with the desire to have a job where their child wouldn’t mean sacrifice or liability, the resulting Posies is a family-friendly place that includes a sound-proof playspace and specially-trained “mommy-ristas” (other neighborhood stay-at-home moms) serving locally micro-roasted Ristretto Beaumont Blend espresso, as well as flaky Florio Bakery baked goods and house-made sandwiches and wraps. Although the cafe may not be in a hip location, the fine people and families drawn to it are worth the outing. Pack up the kiddos and go get some good coffee, vibes and playtime today!

Saint Cupcake

Wonderful little treats are always waiting in my favorite cupcake shop. It still amazes me that I willingly pay so much for these little morsels. My favorite is the big top with chocolate chips and pile of yummy frosting.

BigBelly Trash Compactors

big_belly_inactionBigBellys are headed to Portland.  These solar powered trash compactors would replace the traditional trash cans on downtown Portland sidewalks.  A BigBelly trash compactor can hold up to five times the trash that an old can will, and because it is enclosed you will not be seeing overflowing gross trashcans along the street either.  A BigBelly costs about $8000, so to help cover costs local businesses can use the “Adopt-a-Belly” program to purchase a Belly and installation from the city.  Once installed, your BigBelly will provide the city with a clean green trash collection service, as well as an advertisement for your business on the side of the unit.  The city would also save money as the garbage collection for each unit would reduce from the current 5x weekly emptying, to a 1 time weekly trash pickup saving the city about 80% on maintenance, cleaning, gas for the garbage trucks, and personnell time.  It is estimated that the city will reduce its CO2 emissions about 250,000 lbs per year from these trash compactors alone.
