Holiday Ale Festival in Pioneer Square

coldbeerThis year from December 2nd through Sunday December 6th the Holiday Ale Festival will be keeping Portland beer lovers warm with the cold season brews at Pioneer Square.  Come try dozens of different beers from all over the northwest under the large canvas tent.  Gas heaters are scattered around the square to prevent the frosty weather from creeping in and keep the beer fans warm.  Take a gander at the beautiful Christmas tree that the city put up and decorated this year while attending the premier winter beer festival of the west coast. Like other beer fests you must be 21+ to enter.  A $20 package gets you a wristband and an official mug as well as tokens for beer.  A sample is one token, and a full mug is 4 tokens.  Designated drivers get in free (but no beer for you).

Aybla Grill

ayblaMy favorite part about Portland is the food.  There are amazing restaurants, and little food carts everywhere offering their unique eats.  When I am in the mood for Greek food, the Aybla Grill is an authentic and tasty lunch that you can grab at their cart on the go, or stop at their restaurant at 5th and Oak.  The gyros are made on huge high quality pita and packed full of fresh ingredients all the way to the top.  The kabobs are hot and the falafels are very good too, though I almost always stick with a hot fresh lamb gyro and an ice cold Coke. Savor the Soup

soupThree different friends, at different times, recommended (or rather, insisted) that I visit Savor the soup cart on 10th Ave downtown…  Then, one of my favorite blogs about Portland had a review of the various soup options among the famous Portland food carts (See the post on Neighborhood Notes).

So yesterday I braved the cold and rain to have a hot bowl of soup.  The special of the day was a homemade chili that smelled very good, but I ordered the broccoli and cheese soup and a plain grilled cheese sandwich.  The grilled cheese sandwich was hot and perfectly melted, and the bread they used was remarkable and fresh.  The soup was thick and creamy and tasted amazing, and there was a lot more in there than just broccoli and cheese, I am sure that there was artichoke heart in there as well.  The food is fresh and homemade, and quite healthy.  If you do not order a sandwich with your soup, it comes with locally baked bread that will have you wishing for more.  Though the price was a little more steep than I would like for a lunch cart, $17 for soup and sandwich for two people is not bad by any means.  Check out Savor Soup House for a good hot lunch on a cold day.

Oregon Haunted Houses

haunted-houseHalloween is this weekend, but you can get an early dose of screams at one of Oregons many haunted houses from Portland to Salem.  We have already told you about the award winning, bone-chilling fun found at the 13th Door, but there are plenty of other haunted houses for the adrenaline junkie located all over the area.  Be sure to check out:

Milburns Haunted Manor

Has two different attractions for adults, the Haunted House and the Wickedwood Forest.  Both attractions are $8 (save $1 if you buy tickets to both).  This haunted house continually wins the #1 or #2 spot for the best haunted house of the season.  Boo Lane is a haunted house that is more kid friendly.  They also have the “Last Ride” which simulates being carried in a locked casket and buried alive. Located at 11503 Broadacres Rd NE.Hubbard, Oregon 97032503-982-1232

FrightTown

FrightTown is located beneath the Portland Memorial Coliseum and will be open until November 1.

Dine Out to Dig In

dine-out-dig-inSome great local restaurants now through October 21st are giving 10%-20% of their profits to Growing Gardens.  Growing Gardens is one of the best ideas to come out of Portland, they bring supplies and knowledgeable volunteers to the homes of low and fixed income families and create a garden for them in their yard.  Every family that gets a garden from Growing Garden also gets assistance and training to learn what they need to know to care for their new plants.  Growing Gardens is a fantastic green idea that brings fresh food to those who need it most, and starts an amazing trend of food sustainability.

Come celebrate food sustainability and benefit Growing Gardens by having dinner at one of these fantastic and giving restaurants now through Oct 21:

The 13th Door

13door-zombieHaunted Houses are one of my favorite parts of Halloween.  Going in to see what creative creatures and horrors have been put together to try to scare the crap out of the kids. Sounds like fun.  Portland has some of the best haunted houses, and plenty of choices even for an enthusiast.  Among the very best, the 13th Door has been scaring the daylights out of people for years and opens up shop this year on Friday October 9th.  13,000 square feet of horrors and gore all for your entertainment.  Grab tickets online early here.  This haunted house is rated PG-13 so no children will be allowed without a parent.  This truly frightening haunted house manage to scare nearly all children and most adults; and does not give refunds or new shorts if you wet yourself or leave early. Come give it a try (and bring the kids if they are brave) from 7-10pm on weekdays and 7-12 on weekends.
