Belmont Station is a Darn Good Thing

July 15, 2008

Belmont Station, Portland, ORI’m no beer snob. There are times when I enjoy a cold PBR or High Life just as much as a Ninkasi Double IPA. I just love beer. All of it. Ok, there are a few exceptions: berry beers, malt liquor, any beer with the word “ice” in the title, etc. But pretty much everything else is fair game. And everything else is what you will find at Belmont Station.

A craft beer cloister. A microbrew metropolis. A malt mecca. A beer bar. A sousing sanctuary. With bottle and draft beer from around the world: the attitude at Belmont Station is simple: if we don’t have if, we can get it. The strength of this beer store/biercafé, however, is its constant supply of seasonal or limited release beers. At any given time, you can walk into Belmont Station and try a beer that you will likely never find again, ever. The tap selection has an emphasis on, but is not limited to, local and regional beers. The store part of Belmont station takes the same approach as a wine store, with different sections for the different beer-making regions of the world. And in this modern artisan beer climate, which I think we can safely call a Renaissance, giving beer the same treatment as wine only makes sense.

Belmont Station is also a convenient spot to pick up your next keg (or “barrel” if you’re from Wisconsin). They have a rotating stock on hand and, if you give them 3-4 days notice, they can get you pretty much anything else you can think of. Over the years, I’ve watched this place slowly and steadily expand its base without losing track of its community vision. You can now get great homemade food, sit inside or out, and sample up to 12 hard to find draft beers (they used to have 4 taps). They also offer locally ciders and meads, locally produced sake, and select Oregon wines from small production wineries. Belmont Station is a Portland gem and a beer lovers paradise. Trust me when I say you will be blown away with what this place has to offer. It’s almost hard to describe.
