Capoeira Camp 2008
June 25, 2008
About five years ago, during one of my first weekends in Portland, my friends and I randomly ended up at some party in NE. When we walked to the backyard we saw a dozen or so people roundhouse kicking and karate chopping inches from each others faces around a huge fire pit. There was a group of rag tag musicians playing South American inspired music and everyone seemed to know exactly what was going on except my naive Midwestern friends and I. We cracked a beer and said “so, this is Portland.” Later that night I learned that what these crazy people were doing was called Capoeira.
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian game of strategy, grace, music and dance. It also teaches the art of navigating life’s obstacles with ease. Develop fitness, flexibility, coordination and musicianship. Learn a bit of Portuguese and have tons of fun!
Classes are held at Portland’s Om Tradition Arts Mondays thru Thursdays from 9:30-noon. They are open to ages 9 and up (or 5-8 with a participating adult). It is $85 a session, $240 for three and $375 for 5. Scholarships and family discounts are available and encouraged! For more information, visit www.capoeiracamp.blogspot.com or call (503) 287-9876.
