On the weekends I work at a bar, which is located in the Nob Hill neighborhood, in Northwest Portland. There, I have the opportunity to serve many different types of folks beer. However, whenever anyone orders a PBR, their friends, or people around them always say things like, “you must live on the Eastside” or “such an Eastsiders beer” or some how relate the beer to the Eastside. While there are many stereotypes between the differences of the Eastside and the Westside of Portland, I personally had no idea why PBR would relate any more to either side of Portland.
Until today…

Driving through Southeast Portland today, on Belmont St., I ran across these murals:

Then, driving back on Morrison St., I saw these!

So maybe its not such a far stretch to say that one beer fits in more on one side of the river. I’ll continue not to judge, but at least now I know where people got the stereotype started.

This musical is full of wonderful music and dancing, and amazing puppetry. The story line follows the Disney movie very closely so young audience members won’t be disappointed.

The theme “cycle of life” follows the main character Simba from infancy to adulthood, highlighting his struggles on his path to becoming the leader of his pride. The story has some darker elements, and may not be a good choice for children under 6.

If you get a chance during intermission, check out the orchestra pit. It is huge! There are also additional percussionists perched in balconies on both sides of the stage with their own wide array of instruments.

Word of warning….don’t take the aisle seat unless you don’t mind mixing with the hyenas.

Tickets can be purchased here. Performance is at the Keller Auditorium.

Something about our city is conducive to creativity. Blame it on the weather, or the all micro-brews... Coffee? Hippies? Food carts? Whatever it is, Portland is fertile ground for artists of all forms. Thus the name of this festival amping up and poised to kick us out of our wintry doldrums. This festival broke ground in 2009 and has all their events lined up for their 10-day festival this year. Only, unlike a typical fringe festival, Fertile Ground will feature the finest new work from local artists, performers and resident theater companies, ensuring that the artistic and financial benefits of the festival stay right here in Portland.

There will be plenty of events to keep you occupied and a range of prices and options that should keep your wallet happy as well. A few of the offerings featured range from:

Visual arts

Something about our city is conducive to creativity. Blame it on the weather, or the all micro-brews… Coffee? Hippies?

The Oregon Jewish Museum has officially moved from Old Town to it's new home in NW Portland. To celebrate this, as well as become acquainted with it's new community, they are hosting an open house this Sunday! This means a free preview of their opening exhibitions!

This local museum hosts rotating art exhibits and educates on all things Jewish and Oregon related. Did you know that before the Federal Urban Renewal Program in the late 50s, Portland's Old South Waterfront was home to a booming Jewish and Italian neighborhood? Aside from the available walking tour of this old 'hood, you can find out all you need to know about Portland's Jewish history at this museum. Which, I think, is always fun and important to do.

So, stop by the new digs of the Oregon Jewish Museum this Sunday and find out what you've been missing!

The Neighborhood Preview & Open House runs Sunday, December 20th from 11:00am - 1:00pm.

Opening exhibits on Sunday will include:

The Shape of Time: accumulations of place and memory

Pop culture humorist Charles Phoenix will bring his hilarious holiday slide show performance to Portland's Hollywood Theater on Tuesday, December 29. The undisputed King of Retro, Charles Phoenix re-visions vintage '50s and '60s Kodachrome slides, found objects obtained mainly through flea markets and thrift stores, and presents them as visual documentation of our society's cultural history.

The slides are what they are - kitchy, random, bizarre. The narration will have you rolling on the floor.

This all-ages performance is presented by Mid-Century Modern League and will benefit the League's efforts to restore the vintage Crown Motel sign. Tickets are $15 and can be had at the Hollywood Theater box office or online. Get tickets now. This performance sold out fast in 2008.

While we're on the topic, anyone who's a sucker for kitch should sign up for Charles Phoenix's Slide of the Week. Phoenix also runs his own Test Kitchen (check out the Astro Weenie Christmas Tree) and hangs out with Martha Stewart. You'll also hear him on NPR's Day to Day from time to time.

It's collosal. It's Crafty Wonderland's Super Collosal Holiday Sale and, yes, it's big. So big, they had to move to the Convention Center to make room for the 200+ vendors, all vetted - you won't find junk here! Sure to be awesome. You'll find everything from handmade cards and artisan candles to custom jewelry from hip local designers, including luscious pieces by ASA Custom Jewelry. And so much more. Letterpress! Hip baby clothes! Recycled art! Check out the complete list of vendors.

Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Here's a tip: show up early, like before the opening at 11 am. First 200 people in get goodie bags stuffed with special crafty treats. Come for the shopping, stay for the free workshops with talented local artisans (check out the workshop schedule below), and come away with unique handmade gifts for everyone on your list.

Shopping can be exhausting. Recognizing that fatigue may set in, your thoughtful organizers made sure to include a comfy space to relax as well as booths selling vegetarian and vegan treats plus a full bar slinging craft cocktails for, you know, energy.

You might already be familiar with Crafty Wonderland through their sales at the Doug Fir, which have taken place monthly over the last three years or so. Did you hear that Crafty Wonderland is peacing out of their monthly Doug Fir venue and switching to a format of two big sales a year? Mark your calendars: the Super Colossal Spring Sale is set for May 1st and 2nd, 2010 at the Convention Center. Get the details here. If you're a local craftsperson looking to show, or if you're like me and just can't get enough of the local DIY handmade action, join the Crafty Wonderland mailing list for the latest. And take the pledge to buy handmade this year...
