Mississippi Social, Portland, OREvery month Portland’s Mississippi neighborhood holds an old fashioned “social” in order to bring the community together and promote local small business. The next event happens this Thursday, April 10th, 2008. This month’s main feature is the Spring Fashion Show, running from 7:00-8:00pm at Mississippi Rising Ballroom (Mississippi Ave and Shaver). So come on out and see Mississippi Avenue retailers and clothing manufactures showcase the latest fashion and styles coming out of PDX!

Buckman Bash in Portland

Stephen Malkmus, Portland, ORCan you think of a better way to support a good cause than watching two of Portland’s finest songsters rock solo sets at the Jupiter Hotel? Well for $50 (hey, no one said a good cause would be cheap!) you can witness Stephen Malkmus sans Jicks and James Mercer minus The Shins. Come on, this could be your big chance to hear Malkmus do “Zurich is Stained” solo acoustic! The Buckman Bash is a yearly event to benefit Portland’s Buckman Elementery School, an arts-integrated school in SE Portland’s Buckman neighborhood. There will also be a live auction with donated artwork from many local artists. The festivities get underway this Friday, April 11th, with the doors opening at 7pm. Read more

Sometimes a Great Notion, Portland Center StageSometimes a Great Notion, the famous second novel from Pacific Northwest iconoclast Ken Kesey, has been adapted into play form and premiers at Portland Center Stage (PCS), located in Portland, Oregon’s Pearl District. Written and directed by Aaron Posner, the play runs from April 1-27th on PCS’s Main Stage. Kesey’s epic saga of rival brothers, striking loggers, love and betrayal love takes place in the fictional town of Wakonda, Oregon. This is the first stage adaptation of this important fictional work. Marty Hughley, in his review for The Oregonian, calls the play “an artistic triumph worthy of its lineage.” Read more

Portland Musicians Cover Songs

p:ear benefit albumPortland musicians bound together this past year for a good cause. Bridging the Distance is a compilation of cover songs from some of Portland’s best-loved musicians. All proceeds from the album, released by local label Arena Rock Recording Company, go to p:ear, a local non-profit dedicated to helping at-risk youth transition off the streets through a program of education, art and recreation. Some Portland, OR artists featured on the compilation include The Decemberists, The Dandy Warhols, The Thermals, Viva Voce, Talkdemonic, The Minus 5, Point Juncture WA and Blitzen Trapper. Dinosaurs: China’s Ancient Giants at OMSI

OMSI Dinosaurs, Portland Oregon From now until September 1st at Portland’s OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science & Industry), you can see the largest collection of Chinese fossils ever displayed. Dinosaurs: China’s Ancient Giants features more than 20 original fossils of dinosaurs, dinosaur eggs, marine and plant life, etc. The exhibit also includes more than a dozen cast skeletons, four large murals from Chinese artists, and robotic dinosaurs. Admission is $9 for adults, and $7 for youth and seniors.

Degas, Forain, Toulouse-Lautrec at Portland Art Museum

The Dancer, Portland Art MuseumA heavily buzzed-about exhibition at the Portland Art Museum right now is entitled “The Dancer.” This collection, exclusive to the Portland Art Museum, features more than 110 works by three turn-of-the-century Parisian artists: Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). The focus of this exhibition is work inspired by dancers and includes drawings, prints, pastels as well as rarely seen paintings from fin-de-siècle Paris. “The Dancer” is on display through May 11th and costs $15 for adults.
