Sushiville

May 30, 2008

Our kids love sushi and so do we. If you ask our seven year old daughter where we should eat, there is only one answer: Sushiville. The great thing about this place is the convenience of having all the food scooting around on a conveyor and the super nice people who work here. You can of course find better sushi in Portland, but with the prices at Sushiville you can’t go wrong. Plus if you have kids, they can occupy themselves watching the fish go round and round. When it comes to the sushi, I recommend the Dragon Roll, the Tempura Shrimp roll topped with Unagi and the Spicy Tuna Handroll! This place is our ‘go to’ place for good sushi when you’re in a hurry.

Yuki Japanese Restaurant

May 19, 2008

I have dreams about the Oregon Roll at Yuki. The sushi is always great and the service is helpful and friendly. There is a good selection of sushi and other Japanese entrées. The Tuna Sakana is a great starter: pieces of tuna with tempura flash-fried so it’s still raw inside, then sliced and served with a sweet wasabi soy sauce for dipping. There is some outside seating available (nicely set back from the street), which a great place to enjoy your food and maybe a Japanese beer while watching the people stroll by. Overall this is my favorite sushi spot in town, especially if the weather is nice and we can sit outside.

Siam Society

May 12, 2008

Some enterprising individuals have converted what was once an old electrical station on Alberta Street into a great Thai restaurant. The night my friends and I went to check out Siam Society, the food was great but the service was a little slow, albeit friendly and helpful. The cocktail selection was good, with some interesting items like the Jalepeno Pear Cosmo. I recommend a few of those! We shared plates family-style for dinner, ordering the Drunken Noodles, Sexy Beef, Garlic Shrimp and Pnang Curry. Everything was very good except the Sexy Beef which was bland compared to the great flavors of the rest of the dishes. We all agreed the curry was the best dish of the night. The atmosphere was hip and interesting. The dinner was not cheap but not too expensive either: four adults with a few cocktails each and tip for around $200.
