Awesome Benefit Concert @ Holocene

A little more than 3 months has passed since the devastating floods in Pakistan. Though media attention has since shifted, each day there is still a large percentage of affected Pakistanis struggling to survive and rebuild. Infrastructure is in very poor condition, resources are even more scarce, and illnesses are spreading due to remaining flood waters.

If you’d like to do something to help, head over to the Buckman neighborhood tonight where Holocene is throwing a benefit concert to raise funds.

All proceeds will be directed to the family-run Edhi Foundation, an indigenous NGO that has been providing relief. The history behind this foundation is quite remarkable. What started as a one man operation has evolved into Pakistan’s largest welfare organization. For a full bio click here!

Brooklyn Street Skate Park Benefit

A few local skaters have been diligently working to clean up this skate spot in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Their mission statement: To provide the community with a safe positive place to skateboard, while cleaning up the neighboring area. Nice!

With clearance from the community, they have been doing this all by themselves… and doing a mighty fine job I might add.

However, everyone can use a little help sometimes, especially if it’s for the good of the greater community.

This Thursday, October 14th, they are holding a benefit concert.

Hood River Hops Fest

It’s October in Portland which means it’s time to get your beer on. Since September is hops harvest month it’s only natural that beer events, Oktoberfest or not, abound this time of year. This weekend is no exception!

On Saturday, October 2nd, Hood River is hosting their 7th annual Hops Festival. They tout it as the premier fresh hops tasting event in all of the Pacific Northwest. I guess you’ll have to check it out and see for yourself!

All in all there will be over 25 breweries on hand to fill up your frosty mug with over 50 different types of beer. In addition to the local brews, attendees will also have the opportunity to sample local wine, food, shop local arts & crafts, and listen to free live music!

Hood River is a quick drive from Portland and always a nice spot to stop for a drink or take in the scenery.

Rose City Music Festival

Portland – here’s your chance to give a little and receive a lot in return!

Many of us have read recent news reports detailing the budget cuts of schools across the nation. Most of these have directly impacted the music and arts departments from elementary through high school. In some cases, they have been removed completely. As someone who grew up very involved in music and the arts, this especially troubles me.

The discipline required for consistent practice, the emotional rush of performance, and the exposure to new ideas and cultures through creativity all contribute greatly to the development of young and older minds alike.” (rosecitymusicfestival.com)

Here in Portland, Jefferson High School has been weathering some very rough economic storms. In an effort to restart one of our city’s phenomenally creative music and arts programs, speaking about Jefferson, we’re putting on a music festival. The Rose City Music Festival will funnel all proceeds back into Jefferson High School, as well as the elementary and middle schools that are a part of the Jefferson cluster.

There will be 4 days of performances that span a week. Starting with a few benefits and ending with a star-studded all day music extravaganza.

iSalsa in La Calle!

After indulging in the weekend’s many food & beer events, why not spend Sunday dancing off all those calories?

Salsa en La Calle, returns to the Eastbank Esplanade in Downtown Portland this Sunday, August 29th.

General admission is $15, with children under 12 admitted for free.
The price tag includes live music and entertainment, group percussion lessons, and free dance lessons – which will be going on all day and include a wide variety of styles. All lessons are taught by some of Portland’s premier salsa instructors.

For dancing fuel, head to one of the many food vendors on hand showcasing flavors from Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, and Cuba.

In addition, there will be a beer garden area for the adults and a children’s art tent for the younger crowd.

Bike to Beer Fest!

This Saturday, August 28th, Hopworks is hosting their annual Bike to Beer Festival! This fun event runs from noon to 10pm, in SE Portland, and is filled with activities for all ages. There will be competitions, trick riders, lots of music, food, and of course beer! In fact, there will be 15 Hopworks beers on tap to keep you happy.

As the event title suggests, this is a car free event. To plan your bike route, click here. (Public transit is okay too!)

Or, Portland Bicycle Tours will be leading a group ride from the Salmon St Springs Fountain to Hopworks @ 5pm.

Music on Main Street

It’s summer in Portland which means free music and fun abound! This years installment of Music on Main Street is currently in full swing. For those who don’t know, this is a yearly concert series that shuts down Main Street, between Broadway and Park, right next to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in downtown Portland.

All shows are free and open to the public. The adjoining Art Bar will be on hand, starting at 4:30pm, to quench your thirst and satiate your hunger. Yes, wine, beer, food, and music!

Tonight’s show features Jujuba, along with Nojeem Lasisi. This Nigerian Afrobeat ensemble will be enticing the crowds with their funky rhythms and danceable beats.

NW 23rd Avenue “Street A-Fair” July 9-11th!

Celebrate the reopening of NW 23rd Avenue in Portland’s Nob Hill July 9-11th. Enjoy sidewalk sales, $5 food specials, and street performances starting Friday, July 9.

The main event ribbon cutting ceremony is slated for Saturday July 10 at 11:00am NW 23rd between Hoyt & Johnson. Former Mayor Bud Clark, Everclear frontman Art Alexakis, PDOT’s Susan Kell and my favorite the Rose City Rollers to host!!

Ribbon cutting to be followed by High Rollers of Portland’s Rose City Rollers showing us their stuff with a demonstration.

Chalk art competition runs 11:30-3:30. Help the Right Brain Initiative, a non-profit created to support Portland Public Schools Art and Culture K-8 Programs, by voting with dollars for your favorite chalk artist.

Other Saturday events include: Dogwalk fashion show and parade brought to you by Hip Hound Fashions; Karaoke from Heck; and live music from The Low Landers, Alan Singley & the Pants Machine; Curious George visits Child Play; skateboard demonstrations. The Pixie Project & Family Dogs New Life will also be on NW 23rd to help you adopt the pooch of your dreams.

Sunday Parkways 2010!

The 3rd installment of Sunday Parkways starts this weekend, Sunday, May 16th! Looking at the forecast, it’s going to be a great weekend to get out there and bike, walk, eat, dance, and meet your community!

What is Sunday Parkways, exactly? It’s a city event that closes 6-8 miles of roadways to cars and instead is open only to pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, unicyclers, and quite a few interesting “bikes.”

The first event this weekend will be taking place in NE Portland. Essentially, making this section of NE Portland one giant park. It’s a total of 5.8 miles and will officially connect Woodlawn, Alberta, Fernhill, and Wilshire Parks. There will be an optional additional loop as well, if you’d like to extend your Sunday stroll.

This is always a great event with plenty to see and do along the way. In addition, each park will be packed with music, yoga lessons, food carts, local community and business information, and just plain fun.

This is a family friendly event and everyone is highly encouraged to participate. So, get out and enjoy the weekend Portland!

Fertile Ground ’10

Something about our city is conducive to creativity. Blame it on the weather, or the all micro-brews… Coffee? Hippies? Food carts? Whatever it is, Portland is fertile ground for artists of all forms. Thus the name of this festival amping up and poised to kick us out of our wintry doldrums. This festival broke ground in 2009 and has all their events lined up for their 10-day festival this year. Only, unlike a typical fringe festival, Fertile Ground will feature the finest new work from local artists, performers and resident theater companies, ensuring that the artistic and financial benefits of the festival stay right here in Portland.

There will be plenty of events to keep you occupied and a range of prices and options that should keep your wallet happy as well. A few of the offerings featured range from:
