time squared

timesquared21What are you going to do on New Years Eve? You could ring in the New Year with your standard black tie champagne toast, or with a dose of superficial bacchanalia Downtown, or you could stay at home watching Carson Daly, or…

…you could start the decade off RIGHT by heading out to Time2 at 2410, that super-fun dance club on Mississippi. Why is 2410 the spot? Several reasons. The venue features a super sound system and several bars. It’s just off the MAX Yellow Line, so you don’t have to drive. Plus, check out the music line-up: MarchFourth Marching Band, Flying Lotus, plus over a dozen other performers for you party-going thrill-seekers. See the full line-up here.

More than just a place to drink and shake it, Time2 gives you the opportunity to explore themed art installations that ask the viewer to reconsider humanity’s connection to natural history. Oh, and City Repair volunteers will be on hand with the T-Horse + Pillow Lounge for your tea-sipping, pillow lounging pleasure. Get your community on.

Admission is $30 Advance or $35 at the door. Get tickets on-line here or in-person at 360 Vinyl, Anthem Records and Jackpot Records.

Take public transportation, be safe, and stay awesome. Cheers!

jasonwebley

Come out for GIVE 2009! This all-ages benefit concert at Backspace will feature a eclectic line-up of performers, including a rare solo acoustic performance by Brent Knopf (of Menomena) as Ramona Falls, along with Calvin Johnson (of Halo Benders and Beat Happening), and the euphoric accordion-wielding troubadour Jason Webley.

For proof that this concert will rock, check out this YouTube video of Halo Benders. Also, here’s an interview with Jason Webley. We all know Menomena at this point, right? Wiki them. Knopf’s pro bono performance is sure to draw a crowd.

The proceeds from GIVE 2009 will benefit JOIN, a local non-profit that reaches out to homeless populations in Portland. Did you know 16,000 people in Portland are experiencing some form of homelessness? JOIN finds creative ways to work one-on-one with homeless folks, whether its giving free haircuts or transitioning people into permanent housing.

Coordinating the whole shin-dig is Spectrum Culture, a smart, sassy, and very savvy on-line zine (that you should be reading) covering music, film, and food.

Rock out and feel good about it. Just $12 gets you in. Get tickets here. GIVE, JOIN, and do it NOW. Sure to sell out!

After a brief stint gallivanting about the country, The March 4th Marching Band is back home in Portland to release their new album “Rise Up”.  Knowing how an M4 show usually is, this should be one big party.

To celebrate the new release, they’ll actually be performing two shows at The Wonder Ballroom on Thursday, November 19th.  The first is all-ages and the last will be 21+.

The Goodfoot Pub & Lounge

goodfoot2We just can’t get enough of The Goodfoot around here. The two-story building is, at once, a dance hall, a pool hall, and a neighborhood bar…several very different venues under one roof! Either floor comprises a full night in itself, but people frequently venture up and down the stairs, and you should, too.

Upstairs is the wide-open, brightly lit bar and art gallery. I love the huge, comfy booths – perfect for you and your five closest friends to gather over some pints. There’s a full bar and always something organic on tap. The food menu presents a selection of above-average pub grub – a decent burger, good fries, plenty of fried food – along with salads, sandwiches, and wraps. The art is, well, trippy, and is displayed alongside numerous concert posters. Worth mentioning are the well-maintained pool tables and the pinball – fun!

Happy Hour (5 pm to 9 pm daily) gets you $2 PBR, $3.50 organic drafts, free pool, free jukebox, and more.

Downstairs is the dimly lit dance hall, where a modest cover usually gets you in. Musical acts on most nights tend to favor the jam band/bluegrass end of the spectrum, which is fine, but you know what’s even better? DJ Aquaman’s Soul Stew, happening most Fridays (check the schedule). Bring your friends, get your groove on. My experience? Always good times, zero creepiness, everyone’s loose, and you feel like you’re dancing in your friends’ parents basement…in a good way.

Trash Couture

usefunky-lady-and-text

One man’s trash is another man’s… formal wear?  This annual Portland event aims to educate the masses about waste reduction, recycling, and creative re-use.  What better way to do this than with a couture fashion show based on wearable art and “trash”?  Cool!

This year Junk to Funk is also collaborating with Scrap in their education goals; who will be onsite with a DIY table for all you audience members.  Should you be inspired by the crafty runway models, you can try your hand at recycle fashion here.

There will be music and performances by Junquestra as well.  This all ages event will be hosted by Mayor Sam Adams and Marjorie Skinner from The Portland Mercury.  Don’t be fooled, this is one serious runway show.

Video Games Live!

The Oregon Symphony is about to get its game on.

This weekend only, November 7th-8th, the world touring production of Video Games Live is descending upon Portland.

conductor

Combine the energy of a rock concert, the passion of a symphony, and then throw in lazers, choirs, lighting, big-screen video footage, live action, unique interactive segments… and you’ve got one explosive experience.  Even if you’re not a gamer, you’ll enjoy these energetic performances.

Video Games Live has been performing sold out shows from Broadway to Singapore since 2005.  They stop in Portland for two nights of nerdy, yet completely enthralling entertainment.  This is one big-budget production you won’t want to miss.

This is also a great opportunity to support your local symphony and arts community.  Being a season ticket holder, I’ve had the privilege of watching Carlos Kalmar, our great conductor, and symphony members try to diversify their concerts to attract bigger crowds and, most importantly, different audiences.  Our local symphony organization has taken a hit, like others in our community, due to the recession.  The entire ensemble has taken big pay cuts but continue to perform and dazzle audiences with the same enthusiasm.  Now let’s get out there and show our appreciation!

Tickets are still available for both shows and range in price from $20-70.

Saturdays show is at 7pm.  Sundays is at 3pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the PCPA box office or through Ticketmaster.

Come early to participate in costume contests and game play.

¡Día De Los Muertos!

dia

So, Halloween is officially over.  Now you’re stuck with bowls of left-over candy, a discarded costume, and a longing for the ghosts of weekends past.  Have no fear, the Milagro Theater is showing their Day of the Dead production for 2 more weeks!

Every fall, this charming local theater dazzles audiences with their witty Día de Los Muertos productions.  Last year they surprised us with comedic acrobatics, but this year they bring us touching moments from Oregon’s rich and diverse past.

With “Canta y No Llores” (Sing and Don’t Cry),  we are transported back to a depression era Oregon.  5 strangers, from different parts of the country, descend on a campsite nearby the construction of Timberline Lodge.  With different issues and reasons for their migration to Oregon timber country, we see these characters shed one way of life for another.  Doing so while keeping their optimism and traditions in tact.  When times are hard, sometimes music, family, and cultural traditions are what keep us going.  Weaved through this production are, of course, the undead and scores of musical numbers.  Pun intended.

So if you feel like you’re not quite ready to give up Halloween, stop by the Milagro and live on with the dead.

Canta y No Llores runs through November 15th.  Tickets are $22 for general admission and $16 for students.

You can find more details and purchase tickets online directly through Milagro’s website.
