Impact Film Festival
June 11, 2008
On June 14th, the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) and Sierra Club will present the Impact Film Festival at the Hollywood Theater. This one-day festival will feature documentary films along with an expert panel discussion about the intersections of environment, community and public health.
The Impact Film Festival aims to raise awareness of the impact that environmental concerns have on our health and our community, and second, to empower our community to positively impact the world around them.
The festival begins at 7:00pm with the screening of four short films: “Intersection Repair,” “The True Cost of Food,” “The New Dream,” and “The Appalachians.” At 8:30pm there will be a question and answer session with experts in the fields of renewable energy, the green economy, public health and sustainability. The festival will conclude with the feature presentation, “The Power of Community” at 9:20pm.
The event is free for NCNM students and $7.00 for the public. Doors open at 6:30pm, with the feature presentation concluding at around 10:15pm. Visit www.sierraclub.org/community/portland/ for more info.

Pet Aid Concert 2008!
June 3, 2008
If you’ve visited the Oregon Humane Society Shelter on NE Columbia Blvd in the last year or so, then you know what an amazing facility it is and what a great service it provides. Unfortunately, good things don’t usually come cheap. It costs a lot to staff and maintain such a place. That’s why the Oregon Humane Society has teamed up with McMenamins to put on Pet Aid 2008, featuring music from Spoon, Presidents of the United States of America and Nada Surf. $2 of every ticket will go directly to the Dove Lewis Building Project and OHS’s Second Chance program, the latter of which brings over 2,000 animals every year from shelters throughout the state for a second chance at adoption. The program has a 100% success record of finding new homes for these animals. The 2008 Pet Aid concert takes June 13th at McMenamins Edgefield. For more info and for ticket information go to www.oregonhumane.org.

Reach the Bridge Run
May 19, 2008
On June 29th, help fight lung cancer by participating in this year’s Reach the Bridge Run, Portland’s only reverse-timed race. As they say, leave as early as you want or as late as you dare! The challenge is to reach the bridge before it goes up at 9am-SHARP! One option is to take the 8K course (or shorter 2K option) which is all downhill. Starting at the World Forestry Center in Hoyt Arboretum, you’ll cruise past the Rose Garden in Washington Park down to PGE Park, ending with a straight shot down Burnside. The Finish Line Festival will take place on the Burnside Bridge.
At 9am, the bridge will go up to the sounds of Portland’s Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers. This marks the end of the race, but just the beginning of the party!
All proceeds from the event will benefit the American Lung Association of Oregon and help fund lung cancer research. Participants who fundraise for this event are eligible for great prizes and will help fund the research that makes an impact on this devastating disease.
