Eco-Chef Bryant Terry at Portland Farmers Market

bryantterryIf you’re into farm-fresh food prepared with love and style, you’ll not want to miss next weekend’s Portland Farmers Market, when eco-chef, food activist, and author Bryant Terry will be showcasing his ingenious culinary techniques as Chef in the Market. That’s happening 10am-12pm on Saturday, August 29 at the PSU Market. He’ll also host the first-ever Lunch Box Event for the kiddies from 10-11am on Sunday, August 30 at the King Market at NE 7th and Wygant (please RSVP).

Who is Bryant Terry? A Tennessee native, Bryant Terry was raised to appreciate good food. Terry’s work uses cooking as a tool to highlight issues of social justice and to demonstrate ways everyone can feed themselves healthy, sustainable meals (without filing for bankrupcy about it). Author of the cookbook Vegan Soul Kitchen and co-author of foodie kitchen guide Grub, Terry’s skill navigating the often duplicitous world of mainstream organics will surely help even the experienced organic shopper make informed decisions about what to buy and how to prepare it. Check out the Grub website for some recipe ideas. Quick quinoa salad? Blackberry lemonade? Mmmm…

I have to say: I love the Portland Farmers Market (PFM) Chef in the Market program. First, it’s a great way to pick up some new ideas for what to do with all the local, seasonal produce you just bought. It also adds to the festival atmosphere so typical of PFM. Be there on the 29th to find out what an ‘eco-chef’ is and get your copy of Terry’s books signed!

Terry’s appearance at the King PFM on Sunday, August 30 marks the first ever Lunch Box Event. Activities include cooking for kids, nutrition bingo, a scavenger hunt, and even a guess-that-fruit-while-blindfolded game. Hey kids, food = cool!

Even if you miss Bryant Terry’s appearance, the last week in August is a great time to check out Portland’s largest farmers market since harvest season is in full swing. There are a total of five separate vibrant, open-air marketplace operated by PFM, each boasting a wide variety of high-quality goods produced by numerous vendors from around the region. It’s a scene.
