Sundae in the Park
There’s a full day of good times to be had this Sunday, August 3 in Sellwood Park. The good people at Sellwood-Moreland Improvement League (SMILE, the neighborhood association) are hosting Sundae in the Park, an annual tradition now in its 29th year. Always on the first Sunday of August, Sundae in the Park is the perfect way to (hopefully) bid farewell to the scorching heat wave we just collectively endured. So what’s the deal? Armed with over 100 gallons of premium ice cream, some hot dogs, and a full line up of entertainment, SMILE aims to bring to community together, feed them, and let everyone share some summertime fun. What more could you ask for? How about a brass band, a jazz band, live comedy (Neonman, from Denmark), a climbing wall, and salsa dancing? Well, they’ll be there, too. Check out the full schedule of events here.
At 9pm, Portland Parks and Rec will screen Indiana Jones and the the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Have you heard about these free movie screenings going on all summer around town? Let the public parks become your new living room. What an amazing public service! See the complete schedule here.
If you live in the Sellwood-Moreland area, you gotta go. Your summer will not be complete without Sundae in the Park, believe me. So get out! Meet your neighbors, eat ridiculous amounts of ice cream with them, and enjoy the live music. I had a blast last year. For those living in other neighborhoods, I encourage you to make this one a Sellwood Sunday. Maybe bike south from OMSI along the Springwater Corridor. It’ll take you right to the park. From there, you have all the charm and modest eccentricity of Sellwood within biking distance. Oaks Bottom? Antiquing? An old fashioned amusement park? It’s all there.
Sundae in the Park: it’s a classic community get-together. It’s perfect for kids of all ages. And, this year, it’s going to be EPIC.
