The recent debut of Ganesh has expanded the already breathtaking collection of eastern religious sculptures and artwork that is available at the Portland Art Museum. Though Ganesh the elephant is not the only cool Hindu artifact in the museum, a large sculpture of Ganesh’s father (Shiva) has been part of the collection for some time now. The eastern art collection also includes artifacts from Korea, Japan, China, and India. As the seat of buddhism and hinduism for hundreds and hundreds of years, India was a large source of these religious sculptures, paintings, and many little ivory icons with detailed carvings displayed. The pottery and tapestries from Korea is a also a good stop to make, the tapestries are woven with detailed writings in the ancient Korean language. Though, don’t make any sudden movements near the tapestries because the motion sensing units are extremely sensitive and will set off the alarm (yes, I’m only warning you because I did set of the rooms alarm on accident). Come check it out, tours of the exhibit are going on nearly every afternoon until June, adults are $15 and kids under 17 are always free.
