Happy Hour at Jake’s Grill
May 7, 2008
Jake’s Grill is an exercise in displacement. It has the feel of a prim 1950’s hotel restaurant in Chicago or New York. There’s nothing hip about this place. It is meat, potatoes and fine cigars all the way. And the prices are as high as you would expect. For those of you on a budget, however, fear not! To experience the opulence of Jakes Grill without busting your bank, come down any night between 3 and 6 pm for their ridiculously cheap happy hour. While there is no deal on drinks, the $1.95 food menu more than justifies the overpriced libations: an expertly prepared 1/2 pound cheeseburger with fries, oyster shooters, salmon ceviche, ahi tuna rolls, a hummus place and much more–each for under $2.00. You really can’t go wrong and, even if the massive animal heads on the wall start talking to you about their once happy life roaming the free range, you can take comfort in the fact that you are not really you but a bookie from the Bronx out on the town in 1951, sipping Old Fashions and discussing “business” with a few “associates.”
