Ken’s Artisan Pizza
May 28, 2008
Of all the great pizzerias in the Portland area, there’s one that definitely should not be missed. The moment you walk in the door at Ken’s Artisan Pizza on NE 28th your eyes are drawn to the enormous wood fired oven (which I’m told reaches temperatures of up to 8oo degrees). The aroma of freshly baked crust takes over your senses as your eyes gaze above to the natural wood timbers and then down to an expansive bar filled with customers patiently waiting to experience one of the best pizzas in town.
The wait at Ken’s, especially on the weekends, can be lengthy, but the bar is nice and the staff comes around frequently to take drink orders. Once seated, we quickly decided on 2 salads, 3 pizzas and another round of drinks. The pizzas we chose were the Margherita & Arugula, the Soppresata and the Amatriciana. For vegetarians (or just veggie lovers), the Margherita & Arugula is piled high with fresh Arugula on top of a generous portion of mozzarella and tomato sauce. If you desire a little meat in your diet, the Soppressata, which resembles a traditional Pepperoni and Cheese, or the Amatriciana with house cured Pancetta, both make excellent choices. With our meal quickly devoured we still found room to split a desert. The Milk Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with whip cream was the perfect ending to a long but enjoyable night.
