Masu East
June 26, 2008
Sister to the popular downtown sushi mecca Masu, Masu East is more low-key and intimate than its older brother, located on the bohemian rich East 28th strip. Affordable but definitely on the higher-end of Japanese restaurants, Masu offers some the freshest and most inventive seafood in town, like the “Ring of Fire” sushi roll, which combines yellowtail and fried oysters with jalapeño marmalade. For all you burger fans, Masu East sports a Kobe beef patty topped with tomato and fontina cheese on a homemade brioche bun for just $14. As mentioned, the menu has no lack of imagination and isn’t afraid to stray from traditional Japanese dished. For example, they offer seared venison leg with ramen. They also have fantastic drinks like pineapple mojitos, lychee Tokyo drops and of course a premium sake list.
The atmosphere at Masu East is consciously spartan, almost to an extreme. There is a complete lack of color, but an abundance of circle and square-shaped objects. The mellow, ambient music is played low. The service is friendly but calm, allowing you to really settle into your food and conversation. And on a side note, they have these crazy hand dryers in the bathroom that are like something out of the Jetson’s.
