Newborn Elephant Calf Has Name
September 21, 2008
After more than seventeen thousand people voted from five select choices the results are in! Oregon Zoo’s new elephant calf has a name! Samudra (nickname Sam) which is Hindi for “lord of the ocean.” Samudra was placed on the voting ballet because Samudra loves his baths!
Visiting hours for the elephant calf begin at 10 a.m. Staff have allowed visitation to continue until closing but keep in mind keepers may take Samurdra in the back if he needs to rest or becomes overwhelmed. Zoo staff has asked that if you choose to visit on the weekend that you PLEASE ride the MAX. They anticipate parking and shuttle lots will fill very quickly. Samudra is a newborn baby and thus spends a lot of his day sleeping however he is still adorable to watch even when he is asleep.
