The East Burnside renaissance is in full bloom now–at it’s heart the Doug Fir Lounge (830 East Burnside). The Doug Fir has a full-scale restaurant, a stylish bar and patio, a hotel (the Jupiter) and live music downstairs nearly every night of the week. The opening of Doug Fir ushered in a new, prosperous era to this previously seedy and run-down strip. Just a block down from the Doug Fir, a curious new enterprise called Rontom’s Buckman neighborhood was named after Cyrus Buckman, a late 19th century orchardist, city council and school board member. Buckman was one of the first neighborhoods on Portland’s east side to be populated. Many of the homes in Buckman are more than 100 years old. There has been some recent contention due to the construction of large condominium buildings that are replacing some of the neighborhood’s historic homes. neighborhood. Sister to the popular downtown sushi mecca Masu, Masu East is more low-key and intimate. A bit on the spendy side (for eastside standards at least), Masu offers some the freshest and most inventive seafood in town, such as their ?Ring of Fire? sushi roll, which combines yellowtail and fried oysters with jalapeño marmalade. Right next door to Masu, you will find Portland’s newest culinary institution, Ken’s Artisan Pizza (304 SE 28th Ave.), which is firing up perhaps the most perfect crust you’ve ever tasted. The key to Ken’s success is its simplicity: small pies, minimal toppings, good sauce, perfect crust. One example of a modern-day classic at Ken’s is their fennel sausage and roasted onion pizza, with your choice of sweet or with Calabrian chiles. For comforting Italian food in a romantic off-the-beaten-path setting, try Il Piatto (2348 SE Ankeny St.). This charming Italian trattoria is
tucked in a quiet, very residential area of Buckman (no problem finding parking here). Here you will find an extensive wine list, outstanding service and fresh homemade ingredients. Another great little culinary haunt is Noble Rot (2724 SE Ankeny St.), which is more like a wine-bar that just so happens to have gourmet food. With a casual front room, and a dimmer, more clubby back room, Noble Rot is a perfect place to meet some friends, sample from expertly-chosen wine flights and snack on a meat or cheese plate. And for amazing breakfast, look no further than Genies Cafe (1101 SE Division), one of Portland’s most popular breakfast, brunch and Bloody Mary spots.Fun

(600 East Burnside) is beginning to pack in Portland’s hipster elite. Also offering live music some nights, Rontom’s is a large airy industrial space previously utilized as a furniture showroom. Its 70′s swinger-cum-grandad decor and faux-edgy bar staff make it both a popular and reviled spot. Either way, you’ve got to love the couches. For a more avant-garde, underground music experience check out either Rotture (315 SE 3rd)–a two-level lounge/music venue–or the more warehouse-like Holocene (1001 SE Morrison). Both feature live music and DJ’s most nights of the week. Another great Buckman music spot is Duff’s Garage (1635 SE 7th) Portland’s premier country and rockabilly club. A stylish new place that has garnered a lot of interest is a huge renovated bowling alley called Grand Central Bowl (808 SE Morrison). It still has bowling, but now offers a full-scale restaurant, lounge and bar as well. Another new hang out is the Morrison Hotel Bar (719 SE Morrison), a hip, comfortable spot with a remarkable international beer list and gourmet food.History
