A Brief History of Zip Codes

A zip code (also known also as postal code, post code, or postcode) is a series of letters and/or digits that are tacked on to the end a postal address for the purpose of sorting mail. ZIP is actually an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan In 1941, Germany became the first country to introduce a zip code system. The United Kingdom followed in 1959 and then the United States in 1963. Some countries still don’t have national postal code systems, like Ireland, Hong Kong, Panama and Vietnam.

The US system utilizes 5 digit numeric ZIP codes. Since 1983 the US Postal Service has adopted an extended version called “ZIP+4″, which adds a hyphen and 4 extra digits after the first ZIP code. This was implemented in order to identify a smaller area or single large entity.

Zip Code Use in Popular Culture

One of the most famous examples of zip codes being used in popular culture is the wildly popular 90’s American TV show Beverly Hills 90210. Here, as in many hip hop and rap references, it is meant to signify a social status. In 1964 Smokey the Bear was given his own zip code (20252) due to the fact that he he received such an overwhelming amount of fan mail. Another interesting zip code fact involves the comic strip “Peanuts,” which briefly incorporated a character named 5, whose last name (95472) is actually a ZIP code in Sebastopol, CA.
