Queen of Sheba
June 18, 2008
Maybe I’ve been out of the loop the last few years, but Ethiopian/North African restaurants seem to be all the rage in Portland these days. It makes sense. The menus are healthy, affordable and work well for vegetarians, vegans and carnivores alike. Most recently, I checked out Queen of Sheba on NE MLK, one of the oldest Ethiopian joints in town. With a plethora of entrĂ©es to choose from, my friend and I settled on a vegetarian platter with mustard greens, spicy lentils, stewed chick peas, a spiced mushroom stew and several others. The veggie platters are always served family style, on top of a huge platter of injera (a delicious pancake-like bread made from teff flour). No silverware necessary; by tradition, you eat with your hands.
For $20 we had more food than we could possibly eat and the good feeling you get from putting healthy, humble soul food into your body. This is my favorite new Ethiopian restaurant, and since it’s so near my new apartment, I will be a regular in no time.
