US Navy Cruises in for Fleet Week

Yesterday, as Simon and I drowsily stared out our office window across Front Avenue and past the never-ending condo construction, we saw something on the horizon. Something big. It was like the Mayflower reaching the shores of the Americas. Only it wasn’t. It was the US Navy in all its pomp, glory and maritime regalia. What did we do? What any two reasonably sane people would do; we grabbed our cameras and sprinted towards the massive grey hulk of liberty with all the caffeine-fueled fervor and delight we could muster up. We were two orphaned children seeing the ocean for the first time.

Between that moment and about forty minutes later, a quixotic adventure with many profound instances not only tested our vitality and character, but shook the very core of our humanity. Obama Gains Big Lead in Oregon

Barack Obama is not longer simply the precocious wunderkind of the Democratic Party, he is the presumptive 2008 Democratic nominee. And his momentum seems to be once again on the rise, as reflected by a poll recently taken of Oregon voters. What was supposed to be a hotly contested state has turned into a Barack blowout! According to statewide polling conducted by Portland?s Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall Inc., Obama leads Hillary Clinton 55 to 35 percent. Obama?s secret weapon seems to be his reputation among Democratic voters aged 18 to 34. According to the poll, 86 percent said they held favorable views of Obama. By contrast, only 68 percent of those voters had favorable views about the New York Senator.

Clinton and Obama, who square off today in West Virginia primary (a primary which Clinton is expected to win handily), will be back in Oregon this weekend. Hillary Clinton plans on events for Friday and Saturday, while Obama’s campaign says he’ll be visiting on Saturday and Sunday. Read More
