Officially announced today, the Portland Timbers will be the newest member of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.
Tickets and season passes are already on sale through the Portland Timbers official website, though the team will not actually play until 2011 when the team has been formed (which may include contracting players from teams as far away as Europe), and the renovations to PGE park have been completed.
The renovation of PGE Park (in Goose Hollow) is to include larger, newer soccer facilities. The Portland Timbers is the third new team to join MLS recently along with a team from Seattle who were victorious in their first game last night, and Vancouver who was awarded a team earlier this week. Maybe soccer will replace football and baseball as the preferred sport nationwide as it seems to be doing here in the Northwest. No word yet if we will be contracting soccer hooligans from Europe along with the players.
